Is The HCG Protocol Worth It For Weight Loss ?

The HCG protocol developed originally by Dr A.T.W. Simeon’s is a fairly aggressive weight loss protocol and is supposedly a fast way to lose weight. The protocol itself has been very controversial for years.

The HCG protocol uses the HCG hormone which is a hormone produced during pregnancy to facilitate the well being of the fetus.

HCG increases metabolism and mobilize the burning of fat to ensure that energy is provided to the developing fetus, as well as to protect the pregnancy. It is this function that has ignited interest in the hormone's use for weight loss purposes. The protocol is coupled with a low calorie diet (500-800 calories) and mainly consists of meat and vegetables.

Why the controversy?

According to the FDA the protocol doesn’t work and can be dangerous. The FDA approved HCG treatment for fertility and the use of HCG for weight loss is designated as “off-label”.

Those that are against the protocol such as the Obesity Medicine Association say studies  have been done that repeatedly show that the protocol does not cause weight loss and any weight loss that occurs is due to the very low calorie diet that is

part of the protocol. Another problem with the protocol is that there are potentially significant side effects with the protocol such as :

And HCG treatment can be risky in people with any of the following conditions:

  -   Pregnancy

  -   Breast feeding

  -   Heart disease

  -   Cancer or a history of cancer

  -   Gout or a history of gout

  -    History of epilepsy

  -    History of kidney disease

Those that are proponents of the protocol claim that the HCG protocol is a very effective, relatively easy and fast way to lose weight and the adverse reactions are rare.

Our position at Zinnia Aesthetics is that we aren’t a proponent of the protocol but if individuals that have weight problems insist on being on the protocol,  as long as they are aware of the potential drawbacks, side effects and are willing to be monitored closely after a full medical work up we will provide the treatment for up to 40 days or two treatment cycles.
