Health Benefits of Fasting

Health Benefits of Fasting

The major religions have practiced fasting in one form or another as an act of penance,  of atonement for ages and involves the act of abstaining from food or drink for a set period of time.

Interestingly enough fasting is not only good for cleansing the soul,  it turns out to be good for cleansing the body and mind.

Fasting, especially a type of fasting called intermittent fasting can have solid health benefits such as:

  1. Promoting fat loss
  2. Improving insulin sensitivity
  3. Improving metabolism
  4. Starving bad bacteria in the colon
  5. Promoting longevity
  6. Improving brain function
  7. Improving immune system
  8. Fighting cancer cells
  9. Reversing diabetes
  10. Improving fatty liver
  11. Improving neurodegenerative disorders
  12. Reducing inflammation
  13. Improving cellular regeneration and repair
  14. Improving lipid parameters
  15. Normalizing blood pressure
  16. Improving allergies

         and more.....

How does Fasting cause all these positive health benefits ?

Although there are manny different mechanisms involved, one of the main one's is called Autophagy which literally means ”eating oneself”. The Word Autophagy is derived from the Greek word ”auto” which means self and ”phagein” which means to eat.

Basically the body cleanses and gets rid of cellular debris, diseased cells and broken down cellular components and recycles them, regenerating useful components that can rebuild new cell parts.

How is autophagy activated?

There are three ways to activate autophagy:

  1. Fasting
  2. Exercise
  3. Low Carbohydrate diet

Of the three the most powerful is fasting

Thus, fasting has the potential to delay aging and help prevent and treat diseases while minimizing the side effects caused by chronic dietary interventions.
